Modern Genetics for All Students

Modern Genetics for All Students is a curriculum enhancement project aimed at increasing literacy in human genetics and molecular biology among high school students at all learning levels. It has reached more than 38,000 high school students since 1991, and continues to provide yearly support to about 60 teachers and 5,100 students.

The Modern Genetics curriculum is available online for free.

Project Goals

  • Increase knowledge of human genetics and modern molecular biology among students at all levels.

  • Increase awareness of human health issues and aid students in realizing the importance of this awareness.

  • Develop a cohesive curriculum unit that actively engages students in their own learning.

  • Involve students in the process of "real science" in which they use the tools and organisms used by scientists in the field.

  • Refine strategies for the effective presentation of science to traditionally underrepresented student populations.

  • Promote partnerships among scientists, teachers, and educational researchers.
